Transatlantic Research for Urban Forestry

Urban and peri-urban forests (UPF) are essential for our common wellbeing, supply a plethora of ecosystem services and seen as a nature-based solution to reduce the risks of climate change impact. At the same time UPF are under stress of decline to climate change, diseases and urbanization. UPF consists of all single trees inside cities near streets or in plazas, courtyards, and cemeteries, as well as stand-forming trees in forests within city administrative boundaries or just outside the city limits, and trees in derelict corners of the city. In a time period where climate change and urbanization threaten them, and by extension us. We believe synergetic and professional researchinter and transdisciplinary long-term research is essential to minimize harm and better manage urban forests and increase social-ecological resilience of urban forests.

The Transatlantic Research for Urban Forestry (TRUFOR) project aims to build a Transatlantic Research partnership, connect the German URBORETUM consortium with four U.S. universities, promote researcher exchanges, workshops and joint knowledge sharing, as well as strengthen long-term collaboration in urban forestry between Germany and the USA. We aim to develop a network, namely the “Transatlantic Urban Forestry Experiments (TUFE) Network,” as an output of the project.  In addition, we want to develop new funding proposals involving universities and institutions in the TRUFOR project to agencies like BMFTR, DFG, EU, NSF and other funding agencies.
